“BALA GURUKULAM” - Summer Camp 2017

The Mylapore Trio and Sugathan of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation organised their annual edition of Summer Camp for a handful of children during first fortnight of May 2017 at R.A.puram. The children were exposed to various facets of Tradition and Culture including Spirituality, Religion, Poojas and Festivals, History, Traditional Games, Household Chores, Block Printing, Wire work, Dance Therapy, Dough Art, Yoga therapy, Slokas, Vintage Movies, Origami and even to a traditional Tamil wedding etc.

The children were also taken on a small pilgrimage to 7 Siva Temples of Mylapore and other local temples and were explained about the history of Mylapore and the Sthala Puranams of these temples. They were also taken around the historic Vivekanandar Illam (Ice House) and were exposed to the story of Madras which were all very new experience to them. On the final day the children were taught all the basic elements and nuances of performing a pooja at home which was very unique and different.

On the whole, the Bala Gurukulam Camp was very interesting and value based for the children of this generation. As usual the kids presented themselves in traditional attire on Festive occassions. Owing to the entusiasm and interest of the participants the half a day sessions had to be extented to full day for many days. Participation certificates are also issued to the children. The Resource persons included “The Mylapore Trio” - Amarnath, Surendranath & Aparna, Sugathan, Smt. Uma Srinivasan, Smt. Gayatri Krishnaveni Lakshmanan, Smt. Meenakshi Sundaram, Smt. Prema Krishnamurthy etc. The parents felt that the children had a very wonderful time in learning Values of life including trational way of living, socialisation, give and take policy etc.
