Report of the 25th Session of “SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS” - A Virtual Cultural Meet

“The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, Sugathan and Members of Sri SumukhiRajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted the 25th ‘SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS’ – A Virtual Cultural Meet during this extraordinary pandemic situation and lockdown. It was a unique concept and a different conclave involving professionals of different genre. A platform was provided to a Speaker to talk on a subject of his/her choice or profession or expertise and the only criteria are, the topic must be correlated to culture and history. This was followed by an interesting questionnaire session which leads to good interaction. Every week audience learns a new subject enabling themselves to become more knowledge-centric.

The 25th Session was the last in this series for the year 2020. It was conducted on Sunday, 20th December, 2020 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The Programme began with the Prayer on the Trio's Foster Parents Smt. Sumukhi and Shri. Rajasekharan and their Grand Mother Smt. Nagammal, written and sung by Smt. RevathySankkaran.

The Day’s Speaker was Smt. T.R.Sampoornam. She has been working in many famous schools teaching History and has been the Principal in few more schools. She has travelled all over India in including Andamans, where she was with AIR. She is an M.A., M.Phil. and Masters in Music. She is the youngest sister of the Musicologist T.R.Subrahmaniam, whose entire family is full of Musicians. She has been associated with the MylaporeTrio, their family and the Foundation for decades.

Earlier Surendranath mentioned how she got introduced to the Trio and how she was a part of the family through thick and thin. She has been with the organisation throughout and became a part of the Sumukhaiva Kudumbhakam. He remembered a few anecdotes and lighter moments which they shared together during the heydays. He said that there is a Man – Her Husband behind the Success this Lady Musician, who has been always a source of strength and support to her.

Smt.Sampoornam's Topic was on “Bhaava Raaga Thaalam” which she made full justification she explained the nuances of the each one of them with examples. She quoted from ThyagarajaSwam’s Kritis, few from old vintage Tamil movies based on music. she also took examples from history by mentioning Tansen in Akbar’s Court. She said Bhaava is equally important for a singer as in case of a dancer. Without Bhava one cannot bring out the emotions of bhakthi through music. She also emphasised on Raagam and Thaalam. If there is Bhaavam the other two will automatically follow, otherwise, it will just rendering of technical aspects. She dwelled deep into the technical aspects of raagam thaalam and its permutations and combinations. She gave apt examples for each and every raaga and its finesse. Various thaalams and its multiplications and complications were neatly explained with proper examples. On the whole, her talk was a full-fledged one with Sampoornam – a good ending with full musical knowledge.

Sampoornam recollected the good old days of her association with the Trio and their family for decades she recalled many instances, jokes, memorable moments with them especially their Nagamma Paati. She remembered the time when she was a Judge for the MBU, BCKV Competitions, Pooja Vidhanams, Golus and many more Events. She said she has been with the Trio through thick and thin with their family. Her association goes even before the starting of the Foundation.

Aparna retraced some of the memorable moments with Sampoornam aunty viz Spiritual Tours to Srirangam, Varanasi, Kathmandu, Buddha Gaya and many more places. She also recollected the days of Rishabha Vahanam. She remembered Sampoornam Aunty and Purushottaman Uncle’s role in performing her marriage as per Hindu law.

Amarnath appreciated her presentation which was full of information and knowledge. He said that he knew her from the school where they worked together decades back. He recalled many anecdotes and funny moments of the school days and later. Once during the Teacher’s Day Celebrations, He performed a dance for her live singing, which still lingers fresh in the memory. He also recalled many instances during her sojourns at Trio’s house in Mylapore. The "Mottamaadi Nilaa Cutchery" hosted by her in Anagaputtur was well recollected when aeroplanes landed at regular intervals and created the background sruthi for the music.

Sugathan said he knew Sampoornam Aunty well and felt happy that she gave him an opportunity for him and his sister Swathy to perform Bharatanatyam and Mohiniyattam at a Sabha in Pozhichalur where she is the Secretary. He said that he would be happy to have her to perform live for his dance programmes.

As per the diktat of the Foundation, all the Participants were in Blue.

The Programme ended with a happy note to meet again next time with a different Speaker and a Topic.
