To beat the summer heat, recently “The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath,
Aparna & Sugathan (Kalakshetra Alumni and Cultural Ambassadors of Mylapore)
and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted a Very
Cool Special Music Concert – “MOTTAMAADI NILAA CUTCHERY” and “NILAA CHORU”-
Terrace Moonlight Concert - without mics (124th Kala Poshakam – Monthly
Concert) & Moonlight Dinner, for the Eighth consecutive year on Sunday, 19th
June, 2016 at Adyar. The event was conducted on the auspicious occasion of
Pournami and hosted by Smt. Meenakshi Sundaram (Foundation Member) at her Flat
at Bhakthavathsalam Nagar, Adyar, Chennai.
Around
75 people young and old gathered to be a part of this Concert. At the stroke of
5.45pm, when the sun was setting in the west & the moon was seen rising, 12
children from 7 to 17 years gave a cultural feast. The “Koothambalam” Faculty Shri.
Sugathan gave a stunning classical dance performance describing the story of Goddess
Abhirami and the Moon, which was full of Bhakthi Bhaava merging with the sacred
Full Moon. Ms. Manjula rendered Soundarya Lahari comparing the moon with the
forehead of the goddess. She rendered the slokam with mellifluous voice, with
great devotion, enthusiasm & sincerity - a real Music to the ears… merging
with the cool breeze. Both gave a joint performance too… Manjula sang “Nilaa
Kaaigiradhu” for which Sugathan
performed abhinayam… The children gave a variety entertainment. Sahana
disguised as Paatu Maami in Madisar rendered apt dialogues, Pradeebha and Tejus
renderd a slokam, Viswesh and Vignesh gave an excellent performance on
Keyboard, Sree Rudra and Shanjushriya sang bhajans, Pavithra mono acted as Sita
and Kannagi, Varsha and Shravan on violin and vocal music respectively, gave a
combined show. Gauri and Nidhi rendered classical music brilliantly. The Songs
had varied genres like Keerthanais, Varnams, Abhangs, Bhajans etc. and really Cutchery
Kalai Kattiyathu. The Terrace with terracotta tiles was surrounded with
concrete jungles. In this calm and collective atmosphere, the audience were
breezed / fanned by nature’s pankas, sat spell bound for two hours inundated in
the divine music. Amongst them the Moon was also a Rasika witnessing the
Cutchery with shyness…
Sevikku
Alitha Virunthukku piragu Vayitrukkum Eeyyapattathu. At the end of the
Cutchery, all had “Nilaa Choru” which included Puliyan Saadam, Elumichai
Saadam, Saambar Saadam, Thayir Saadam, Urulai Kizhangu Curry, Thayir Vadai, Elumichangaai
Oorgaai, Urulai Kizhangu Chips and Kesari. All these Food items were prepared
and served by the parents with enthusiasm. The parents appreciated the efforts
of “The Trio” in inculcating cultural values to children through their
programs. The children opined that it was their maiden performance of such a
kind and a new experience for them. They felt that it was indeed a very
innovative concept and thanked the Foundation for reviving age-old customs that
are becoming obsolete. A child said “It was a new experience to hear different
kinds of voices without mikes - whether melodious, bold, soft, sharp, shrill,
etc.” Everybody presented themselves in Traditional attire. The Foundation
Members were overwhelmed with the hospitality extended by host Smt. Meenakshi
Sundaram. The TRIO felt it was really a memorable event with a new dimension
altogether.
