Report of the 24th Session of “SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS” - A Virtual Cultural Meet

“The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, Sugathan and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted the 24th ‘SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS’ – A Virtual Cultural Meet during this extraordinary pandemic situation and lockdown. It was a unique concept and a different conclave involving professionals of different genre. A platform was provided to a Speaker to talk on a subject of his/her choice or profession or expertise and the only criteria are, the topic must be correlated to culture and history. This was followed by an interesting questionnaire session which leads to good interaction. Every week audience learns a new subject enabling themselves to become more knowledge-centric.

The 24th Session was conducted on Sunday, 13th December, 2020 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The Programme began with the Prayer on the Trio's Foster Parents Smt. Sumukhi and Shri. Rajasekharan and their Grand Mother Smt. Nagammal, written and sung by Smt. Revathy Sankkaran.

The Day’s Speaker was Smt.Jayanthi who has grown and developed along with the Foundation. She is an MBA and a Diploma in music. She has been conferred the “Sangeetha Yuva Brahmam” by our organisation.

Earlier Surendranath mentioned how she got introduced to the Trio. She came as a young girl to participate in the 1st Margazhi Bala Utsavam and gave a concert with accompaniments. she has been growing with the organisations throughout and became a part of the Sumukhaiva Kudumbhakam. He said the Trio had been a part of all her personal and family issues and problems.

Jayanthi said she was fortunate to be a part of Trio’s extended family and had been a very part of all their events, programmes and social-cultural and religious functions through 2 decades. She has participated and won several prizes in MBU and BCKV in music, painting, kolam including Talent and Multi-Talent awards. She said she was awarded the Sangeetha Yuva Brahmam from us. She participated in Pooja Vidhanams, Bala Gurukulams and Spiritual Tours organised by us.

She learnt everything from A to Z from the Trio and the Foundation, whether it was personal musical family-oriented, values, human relationships, bhakti, Puranas, spirituality what not… everything including many songs and its nuances, rendition with bhaavam and spirit etc. every thematic programme trio trained them perfectly with impeccable knowledge. All stories and significance of each song were imbibed to them before they learnt. She also acknowledged the support rendered Revathy Amma for teaching them some rare songs of her childhood during the thematic programmes conducted by the trio. Her title of the talk was “Sangeetha Sangadhigal”.

Her personal life including marriage and valaikaapu were organised by the Trio and Foundation as a part of the family. Personally, her family and parents were totally entrusted their faith and trust on the Trio in chiselling her future. Even during a medical issue, the Trio were right at the moment to save her. The story goes on. She traced her journey with the Foundation for 2 decades and she remembered many anecdotes which still lingers afresh in our memories.

Aparna retraced some of the mega programmes which trio organised and the Jayanthi, role in it. Her Aiyaa Saamy, Bhojanm and Raama Kaavyam were an eternal hit. Her dress sense and taste of jewellery, sarees, all were inculcated to her by the Trio.

Amarnath appreciated her pinnacle of voice which won her the title from us. She received from Leela Samson Former Director of Kalakshetra, which was a milestone in her history. This award made the cultural secretary at her college and also gave her an opening in Kalakshetra for a few months later.

Sugathan said Jayanthi and other children were very envious of him in the initial stages but later became as one. He said that she was a very hard working girl and had the capacity to grasp anything new and difficult. That’s the reason he gave her the task of singing live for “Pancha Prakrithi” – a Thematic Dance Presentation which was a Great hit.

As per the diktat of the Foundation, all the participants were in multi colours

The Programme ended with a happy note to meet again next week with a different Speaker and a Topic.

Report of the 23rd Session of “SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS” - A Virtual Cultural Meet

“The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, Sugathan and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted the 23rd ‘SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS’ – A Virtual Cultural Meet during this extraordinary pandemic situation and lockdown.

The 23rd Session was conducted on Sunday, 6th December, 2020 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The Programme began with the Prayer on the Trio's Foster Parents Smt.Sumukhi and Shri.Rajasekharan and their Grand Mother Smt.Nagammal, written and sung by Smt.Revathy Sankkaran.

The Day’s Speaker was Smt.Usha Krishnamurthy who had retired from the Madras Telephones. She spoke on the Topic “Pazhamayai Kaappom”.

Earlier Surendranath mentioned how she got introduced to the Trio. She came to their house as Golu visitor and as Surendar colleague mother. Thus started her association with the Trio. She was the person who kindled them to start something new and different in the field of music and dance and indirectly mooted the idea of starting a Foundation. He said that the Dress Code of the Foundation was followed from Lady Sivaswami Girls School and Kalakshetra which was insisted upon by Smt.Usha.

Smt.Usha’s talk was very apt to the topic which she chose to speak. She narrated her life history at various stages. Starting from Andhra, Erode. Tanjore and finally settled at Madras. She explained the rich experiences she gained from different places and cultures she shared her school and college experiences and her dance class at Tanjore. She also spoke about the strict traditions and customs followed in her house during yesteryears.

She shared many Tamil proverbs and usages of past decades which were something new to this generation. She mentioned about how girls and women were protected during those days. She wanted the past to be preserved so that the future does not go hey wire.

The next stage of her talk was about her entry into our Foundation. She said that the Mylapore Trio’s Golu was amazing and out of the world for her when she saw it for the first time. She said it was a Houseful Thematic Golu and the explanation took 1 hour to cover the entire Golu. Each and every doll had a story behind and the explanation was amazing and mesmerising. She said that she was the person to moot the idea of Project which was later on developed as an organisation.

She, her daughter and daughter in law had rich experiences in the Foundation activities especially the First MBU, BCKV and Foundation Inauguration, Pooja Vidhanam, Bala Vidhwan Bavani etc. She shared some lighter moments and anecdotes that happened in the organisation during these events.

She had a word of praise for Nagammal Paati and showered encomiums on her and said that she was ever loving and caring towards one and all. To put it in a nutshell, her talk was very lively, informative and apt for the Title. Her application of the topic to her life history made it very appropriate and suitable. There was a very lively discussion which followed her talk and it continued for a long time.

Amarnath talked about her initiatives and the involvement of her family including her daughter Sindu and daughter in law Vidhya in the very early stages of the Foundation. He talked about her discipline and strictness towards the parents and children.

Aparna said that she was as strict in implementing the Traditional Dress Code among the Parents, Children and Visitors. She also opined that her family’s participation in the 1st MBU and 1st BCKV at RR Sabha. She talked about the happy and entertaining days they all enjoyed alike one family during these Foundation programmes.

Sugathan at the outset named Smt.Usha Krishnamurthy as “Mooladhaara Murthy” – because she was instrumental and kindled the wick by to do something for culture.

As per the diktat of the Foundation, all the participants were in Brown and Cream.

The Programme ended with a happy note to meet again next week with a different Speaker and a Topic.

Report of the 22nd Session of “SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS” - A Virtual Cultural Meet

“The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, Sugathan and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted the 22nd ‘SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS’ – A Virtual Cultural Meet during this extraordinary pandemic situation and lockdown.

The 22nd Session was conducted on Saturday, 28th November, 2020 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The Programme began with the Prayer on the Trio's Foster Parents Smt. Sumukhi and Shri.Rajasekharan and their Grand Mother Smt. Nagammal, written and sung by Smt. Revathy Sankkaran.

The Day’s Speaker was Ramkumar M.A., B.Ed., M.Phil. – TGT in History. His talk was on “Social & Religious Reform Movements of the 19th Century”. It was a very interesting subject which led to a lively debate and discussion.

He explained about services and greatness of Raja Ram Mohan Roy of  Brahmo Samaj, Swami Dayananda Saraswathi of Arya Samaj, Shri Ramakrishna Paramahamsa, Sri Sarada Devi, Swami Vivekananda of Sri Ramakrishna Order, Madam Blavatsky & Col. Olcott and Annie Besant of the Theosophical Society. He traced the Origin, Growth and Contribution of these Organisations which created Renaissance, Reformation and Revolution in the Social, Religious reforms in the downtrodden society.

He described the significance of each of these organisations and their contribution. Abolition of Sati and Jauhar, Child Marriage, Female infanticide, Caste system and promotion of Western Education, Women’s Freedom and Education etc.

He also made reference to the services rendered by the South Indian Reformers like Ramalinga Vallalar, Bharathiyar, Periyar, Ayothidasa Panditar etc. who condemned the caste & creed and women’s liberation. His talk was supported by colourful Pictures and Photos of these reformers which made it very interesting.

Earlier Surendranath mentioned about Sumukhi Amma’s revolutionary thoughts and actions which in turn made the Trio imbibe Her values. Continuation of Poojas, Golu and stopping of ceremonies which were done just for the sake dogmas and not out of sincerity and honesty the priests. He said though Appa and Amma were very pious, religious and spiritual at the same time against caste creed subjugation of women and superstitions and dogmas. Surendranath mentioned about the “Garden Of Remembrance” inside the Theosophical Society at the Adyar Estuary where the Samadhis of Annie Besant, Madame Blavatsky, Madam Montessori, George Sydney Arundale decorate the place.

Amarnath added information on the topic and gave a deeper understanding of the subject. He said these reformers shed their blood and sweat for eradicating the evils of the society like child marriage but Alas’ today child marriage (read calf love) happens in a different manner. He said that Ram Mohan Roy was called the “First Modern Man of India” and discussed in length about Theosophical Society and its principles which were common to the ideologies of St. Ramalinga Vallalar. He said two systems were the outcome of western education and the rest two were against it. He referred to some incidents about Swami Vivekananda's historic visit to Chicago and also gave an insight into Arya Samaj too.

Aparna said Amma and Appa had encouraged them to be spiritually oriented which gave them the mental strength to overcome any situation. They were not orthodox but at the same time against dogmas. Amma performed the rituals for Appa because they had no issues of their own. This was a revolutionary act during yesteryears. She encouraged the Trio to continue the Family traditions and customs even after Appa. She did not stop their creativity and spiritual and cultural thirst in the name of blind practices.

Sugathan recollected a past incident from his family – his grand mother’s mother was the First Person to wear a blouse in the whole area when it was against the established practice. It was a taboo to even think about it during yesteryears. It was a revolutionary act at that point in time. In history, it was known as “Mel Seilai Poraattam” which became a movement in Kerala and Kanyakumari.

As per the diktat of the Foundation, all the participants were in Blue & White.

The Programme ended with a happy note to meet again next week with a different Speaker and a Topic.
