Report of the 21st Session of “SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS” - A Virtual Cultural Meet

“The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, Sugathan and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted the 21st ‘SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS’ – A Virtual Cultural Meet during this extraordinary pandemic situation and lockdown. It was a unique concept and a different conclave involving professionals of different genre. A platform was provided to a Speaker to talk on a subject of his/her choice or profession or expertise and the only criteria are, the topic must be correlated to culture and history. This was followed by an interesting questionnaire session which leads to good interaction. Every week audience learns a new subject enabling themselves to become more knowledge-centric.

The 21st Session was conducted on Sunday, 22nd November, 2020 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The Programme began with the Prayer on the Trio's Foster Parents Smt.Sumukhi and Shri.Rajasekharan and their Grand Mother Smt. Nagammal, written and sung by Smt. Revathy Sankkaran.

The Day’s Speaker was Padur Kalarickal Vikram M.Sc. Psychology Counsellor – Member of Chennai Counselors Foundation, International Affiliate Member in the American Psychological Association. His topic was “Introduction to Psychology”. He gave a good intro about the Historical origin of the subject beginning from the West. He referred to western Philosophers Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Locke and in India Buddha and Confucius in China. He said earlier Psychology was not an independent study but was a part of Philosophy. Only in the 19th and 20th Centuries psychology became an independent discipline. He also mentioned Sigmund Freud – the Father of Psychology. He explained the types of Psychology and distinguished between Psychiatrist, Psychologist and Counselor.

He said Psychology had been in India from the times immemorial. The Vedas, Upanishads, Bhagavat Gita and all Scriptures discuss Psychology in its various dimensions. So it is nothing new to India. He said a separate Department of Psychology was started for the first time at Calcutta University at the beginning of the 20th Century.

His talk gave a real introduction to the subject with a historical perspective which made it interesting. For the first time, there was more number of questions from the viewers which led to further discussions which stretched the session beyond the time limit.

Surendranath said that Amma taught about keeping Zero Mind which is Psychology. To keep the mind without thoughts which would ultimately lead to peace of mind. She had taught socio, cultural interactions which created a good rapport with society.

Amarnath referred to History as teaching psychology with examples. All types of characters were seen in History and Psychology can be studied easily. Good, Bad personalities change the course of history and thus history and psychology are interrelated.

Aparna said Amma and Appa had encouraged them to be spiritually oriented which gave them the mental strength to overcome any situations. This had shaped their psychology and made them self made she appreciated the Speaker Vikram for his talk – an eye-opener on Psychology.

As per the diktat of the Foundation, all the participants were in Mustard & Maroon.

The Programme ended with a happy note to meet again next week with a different Speaker and a Topic.

Report of the 20th Session of “SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS” - A Virtual Cultural Meet

“The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, Sugathan and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted the 20th ‘SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS’ – A Virtual Cultural Meet during this extraordinary pandemic situation and lockdown. The 20th Session was conducted on Sunday, 15th November 2020 from 4.30pm to 6.30pm. The Programme began with the Prayer on the Trio's Foster Parents Smt.Sumukhi and Shri.Rajasekharan and their Grand Mother Smt. Nagammal, written and sung by Smt. Revathy Sankkaran. The day’s Topic was “Namma Veetu Deepavali” - Nostalgic memories of The Mylapore Trio, Sugathan and other members. Surendranath said that Sumukhi Amma and Rajasekharan Appa gave them the best Deepavali every year. They were gifted with 3 sets of new dresses to be worn 3 times. Deepavali eve, on Deepavali morning and the same evening. The very thought of Deepavali brings us to the mind Rajasekharan Appa. He used to purchase new costly dresses to one and all including pattu sarees for amma from Kanjeevaram but he never got one. Crackers were purchased fro Rs.100 which was a very huge astronomical amount in those days. The trio would be excited to pick and select crackers from the list…. All these were fun and frolic. He also recalled that Mangala isai played by nadaswaram artists on Deepavali early morning…. Amarnath referred to the excitement and tension which used to pick one month before Deepavali. He said he used to prepare Bakshanam with Nagamma Paati for ten-day before Deepavali. Appa encouraged to prepare 16 types of Kaaram and Sweet at home. All homemade by Paati and Amma. Everything was made buckets full to be distributed to neighbours, school, college and office friends. He said that the ultimate excitement was from 2am till 6am on Deepavali day. “Ganga Snanam Aacha” was dialogue which used to reverberate the air. He remembered the year in which both the boys wore newspaper and Roopa note shirts which was the fashion of the day Aparna said Amma and Appa had encouraged them to celebrate Deepavali in such a grand manner. She said that she used to get paatu paavadai felt excited about that. The Trio used to firecrackers in both the houses at Rajasekharan Appa house and biological parents house on all 3 sessions i.e 6 times. Paati used to polish the boiler and decorate with artistic designs of Suryan and Chandran using chunam. She said that during her CA days her exams were held during great festival occasions especially Deepavali. She said one needs to have the determination to control the mind and to concentrate on studies without allowing the mind to carried away by festive fun and frolic. Sugathan recollected the experience that Trio and Sugathan had in Kasi during Dev Deepavali a few years back. The lighting of lakhs of Lamps on the 17kms of Ganga Ghats a spectacular sight indeed. Its believed that 33 crore Devas from heaven descend on Kasi to have darshan of Lord Vishvanatha and celebrate Deepavali. Boating in the Ganges and witnessing the illuminated Ganga banks was a once in life time chance. He said he had the rare opportunity to dance on the banks of Ganga on that day – a rare blessing indeed. Smt.Revathy Sankkaran narrated the story of Narakasura and the significance of Deepavali Festival. Octogenarian Kamala Mami shared her experiences of celebrating Deepavali during her childhood days. Sivabala and Ravibala shared their childhood experiences in Deepavali celebrations in Mylapore. Gayathri shared her festive experiences of firing crackers and making bakshnams. Srividya said Deepavali at Thiruvannamalai her native place was very memorable. Lakshmi said that she and her husband celebrated Deepavali together after a long time this year, she also gave us a visual treat of her home made bakshanams. All of them shared almost similar information and their respective customs and conventions i.e., Bakshanams, oil bath, boiler water, firing crackers at Brahmamurutam, New Dresses, Nadaswaram, Deepavali Lehiyam. we also shared many reminiscences of our childhood days. Report of the 19th Session of “SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS” - A Virtual Cultural Meet

“The Mylapore Trio” Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna, Sugathan and

Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation conducted
the 19th ‘SUMUKHAIVA SADHAS’ – A Virtual Cultural Meet during this
extraordinary pandemic situation and lockdown. It was a unique concept
and a different conclave involving professionals of different genre. A
platform was provided to a Speaker to talk on a subject of his/her choice
or profession or expertise and the only criteria are, the topic must be
correlated to culture and history. This was followed by an interesting
questionnaire session which leads to a good interaction. Every week
audience learn a new subject enabling themselves to become more
knowledge centric.

The 19th Session was conducted on Sunday, 8 th November, 2020 from
4.30pm to 6.30pm. The Programme began with the Prayer on the Trio's
Foster Parents Smt.Sumukhi and Shri.Rajasekharan and their Grand
Mother Smt. Nagammal, written and sung by Smt. Revathy Sankkaran.

The Speaker of the day was Dr. Vidya Sayinath Ph.D in Philosophy. She
is a Scholor, Speaker, Writer on Philosophy, Religion etc. She is also an
artist, painter, veena player, dancer and more than all, she is a
Mylaporean. Her topic was on “Contribution of Vedas for the
construction of a sucessful society”.

She opined that the varnashrama was based on profession earlier but
later became birth based. She said all the varnas are equal and cannot
be demeaned. she said every profession is important for the
development of the society. She also touched upon the 4 ashramas or
the stages of one’s life like Brahmacharya, Grihasta, Vanaprasta and
Sanyasa. She siad that it was well arranged and oraganised system of
social strata. She said that over the period of time everything was
misunderstood and misinterpreted by the society.

Her talk was very interesting and simple and was easily comprehensible
even to a layman. The audience were able to understand and wanted
more on such subjects in future.

Surendranath said that Sumukhi Amma and Rajasekharan Appa
inculcated lot of values by sending them to various religious and
spiritual classes. They taught them Philosophy and Bhakthi and brought
them in an atmosphere of secularism.

Amarnath referred the Vedic Society from the historical point of view. He
said that all these were not new to him but her presentation made it
interesting. He said the division of society was based on profession
during the Early Vedic period but got corrupted during the Later Vedic
Period. The same way the position of women was high earlier and later
dropped to the nadir. He said that since the Trio were brought by Amma
& Appa and Kalakshetra, they are purely secular.

Aparna said Amma and Appa had exposed them to all good things in life
in the best of everything. Sublime values were inculcated in them even
at a very tender age. People of all sects were raised by them and hence
there was no distinction among the members of the family. Literally
Birds of Same Feather Flocked Togather in the house.

Sugathan appreciated the speaker and said that she was a “down to
earth” person though she is multifacted. He said that her doctorate was
a comparitive study of Adi Shankara and Ramanuja and their
Philosophies. She writes many articles on religion and gives lectures on
Gita and other mundane topics.

As per the diktat of the Foundation, all the participants were in green &
Rose Attire.

The Programme ended with a happy note to meet again next week with a
different Speaker and a Topic.
