"Thulasi - Nelli Kalyanam" - 106th "Kala Poshakam" Programme (Saturday, 6th December, 2014)

“The Mylapore Trio” - Amarnath, Surendranath, Aparna and Members of Sri Sumukhi Rajasekharan Memorial Foundation organised a special programme as the 106th “Kala Poshakam” on Saturday, 6th December 2014 at R.A. Puram, Mylapore - A Divine Marriage was performed between the sacred Thulasi plant (Ocimum tenuiflorum) and the Nelli plant (Emblica officinalis) on the auspicious day of Vishnu Karthigai and Karthika Pournami, the Janma Dhinam of Vrindha / Thulasi. The Nelli plant represents Lord Krishna. It was very deific and different experience for the people gathered there.

The Trio aesthetically decked the whole place with a cultural and divine touch, using traditional props and colours creating a festive look. Green and Blue Vastrams representing Thulasi and Lord Krishna were used symbolically. The area was filled with different types antique brass lamps to signify Karthigai and Goddess Lakshmi. The ambience was totally religious, sacred with spiritual vibrance. Specially ordered Nelli Chedi (the Maapillai – Lord Krishna) and Thulasi Chedi (the Penn – the Vrindha) were placed on a high platform in special thotties. The so called divine couple, along with variety of jewelry and garlands wore Pudavai and Panchakacham.

On that very auspicious evening of Vishnu Karthigai, Thulasi Pooja was performed by Chi.Sugathan and the Divine Wedding was conducted by Madhwa priests in a traditional manner with religious fervor. The Mangalya dhaaranam took place amidst chanting of mantras and a group of women rendered appropriate marriage songs in Kannada throughout the function.

The Trio said, “ Since Green symbolizes prosperity, sanctity and nature – All of us presented ourselves in gorgeous Green costumes to signify the Environmental holiness of this Wedding. At the end, all were given kesari, vellai kothukadalai sundal as Prasadam, along with Thamboolam and a special gift – a ‘Krishna Thulasi’ sapling & a “Nelli kani”. On the whole it was a very unique, colorful and a bright Karthigai evening.
